Diwali festival: when India arrives in Welly

On 23 October 2014 by From elephants to kangaroos

Beginning of this year 2014, I spent 1 fascinating month in India to discover a (small) part of this big and beautiful country and I met incredible people. It was also for me a great photographic exprience because I discovered there my passion for portraits pictures. So when I’ve heard that we will celebrate Diwali, the lights festival in India, in Wellington where I currently live in New-Zealand, I was really excited. A good occasion for me to see this country without going there, to face again the beautiful faces of Indian people, admire once again the incredible Indian sari on the women, eat a nice paneer and much more.

To explain a little bit, Diwali is the lights festival in India and is one of the main celebrations of the country, such as Holi (the colors festival) for example. It more or less is the same as Christmas and New Year’s Eve in India, and the celebration lasts 5 days. In this case this year, “Christmas” was on Thursday, October 16th and “New Year’s Eve” on Friday 17th. So we celebrated Diwali on Sunday, October 20th in Wellington, and for the occasion, there was loads of shows at the TSB Arena with traditionnal danses, a huge space with food. And at the end of the night, as the tradition wants it, a nice fireworks, on the waterfront.

Here are some pictures that I took during this day, that I spent with my traveller friend Sara, met in Pai in Thaïland, who visited me during this weekend.
